~ The Black Yearling ~
-When you think things can't get any worse...-

Chapter One - Back In History

Alloe
A single cool breeze swept through the valley, cutting through the warmth of the day to bless the hot grass that sat under the sun all day long. The breeze made the grass sway and the leaves dance in the trees. It flowed through the forests like water.

It's joyful ride came to a stop as the forest floor slowly began to taint red. At the heart of the source, the breeze was torn apart as the air rushed from dozens of wolves' maws. Barking and snarling tore through the air as the ground was sprayed with puddles of blood.

The wolves fought each other mercilessly. Barks threatened wolves to get out of the territory, lest they all be destroyed. The loudest bark came from a pure grey wolf, whose fur was normally neatly kept but was now in shreds. Lord Alloe stood tall on top of a rock that over looked the battle field. His fur clung to his body with blood; the thick fur around his neck was barely distinguishable. He barked the orders for the other pack's alpha to step out of his pack, if he dared to face Alloe alone.

A loud bark rang over the tops of the intruding wolves, and a pure black wolf stepped out of the battle to look at Alloe with pure hatred in his yellowed eyes.
"Enough!" He barked over the battle. One by one, the wolves from each pack separated. The black wolf strode to stand in front of his own pack as he spoke to Alloe.

"Well, well. Look who's talking about being afraid to fight. Come down from your rock, Alloe, so we can end this."

Alloe's pack looked up at him desperately. They all knew the laws of this forest - if the alpha should die in battle, the wolf who had slain him took over his pack, and his mate. Alloe looked back toward the den site, where his mate lay under the earth as she hid both herself and their unborn pups.

Alloe leapt from the rock to land with thud. He stepped between the two wolves he had landed beside to face the other alpha, whose name was Sein. Sein snarled in a smile as he gazed at Alloe, who, in turn, began to bare his teeth.

"You're outmatched here, Alloe. You see, I am no longer the alpha. Ruen is."

As Sein's words slowly sank into every wolf, including Sein's own pack, the black male stepped to one side. As if on cue, a large brown wolf stepped from the ranks and bared his fangs at Alloe. This was the one enemy Alloe could not stand a chance against.

Just as he was about to bark a retreat, however, Ruen attacked, baring his fangs down on the grey alpha's cranium. The brown wolf twisted his head sharply and swatted at Alloe's neck with fully extended claws. It took only a minute before Alloe lay in front of his pack - his neck mangled and snapped, the fur soaked in fresh blood.

Alloe's pack could only stare in stunned silence before Sein barked in laughter. As he congratulated Ruen on his spectacular acting, the wolves began to realize what had just happened; Alloe was killed by a wolf that wasn't the alpha of another pack. The act was breaking the forest law, but no wolf dare to speak out. Many of them were injured from lack of food and bloody wounds, and there were less of them than there were of Sien's pack.
